Many Reasons for Foot Pain

The majority of people who have foot pain may suffer through their day, and seek relief when the pain and discomfort becomes worse. Foot pain may happen for a variety of reasons, including being overweight, having endured an injury, or wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. Additionally, the aging process can cause foot pain, and many elderly people find the need to rest their feet during the day. Foot pain can also be caused by bunions, hammertoe, or arthritis. Plantar fasciitis is a common reason to have foot pain, which affects the heel. Anyone who has suffered from a broken foot or who has had an ankle sprain may be all too familiar with foot pain. There are effective techniques that may help to prevent foot pain from developing, and it is helpful to learn about these before purchasing shoes or embarking on a new physical activity. If you have foot pain, it is strongly suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can offer you treatment options, in addition to effective prevention methods.

Stationary Bikes and the Feet

Working out on a stationary bike can provide good cardiovascular fitness and burn calories, without incurring joint pain other forms of exercise can cause. However, while riding on a stationary bike, people can suffer from foot tingling, numbness, and pain. This can be brought on by constriction of nerves or a lack of blood supply to the feet. Causes of this sensation can be as simple as shoelaces being tied too tight, or the pressure from the bike pedals pressing on the small nerves between the toes. Additionally, it may happen from an electrolyte imbalance, or a vitamin deficiency.  More serious health conditions, such as multiple sclerosis or Raynaud’s phenomenon can also cause tingling of the feet. Things to check for can include the fit of shoes, and making sure there is plenty of room for the toes to move freely in. The shoelaces may also need to be loosened, in addition to the adjustments of the seat and pedal distance. Pressure from the seat should be on the sit bones, and the pedal distance should allow for a small amount of bend in the knee when the foot is extended. Rest may help if the tingling is from overuse and it may be beneficial to wear orthotics if it is from nerve pressure. If you are experiencing tingling or pain in your feet while riding a stationary bike, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who determine the underlying cause, and obtain treatment for relief.

  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

How Did I Get a Corn On My Foot?

A small, thickened area of skin on the foot may be a corn. It can cause severe pain, despite its small size. A corn develops as a result of excess friction that generally comes from wearing socks or shoes that are too tight. Frequent rubbing against the shoe can cause a corn to form on the pinky toe or top of the toes. Many people who have a corn notice their walking style shifts to accommodate for the discomfort felt. In addition to wearing shoes and socks that do not fit well, a corn can happen if the toe is deformed or if there is poor bone alignment. Mild relief may be found when the foot is soaked in warm water as this may help to soften the corn. At this point, a pumice stone may be used to gently file the corn down, although this is a temporary solution. If you have a corn on your foot, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can remove it and provide methods to prevent future corns from developing.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists of Coastal Foot & Ankle Wellness Center, LLC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in St. Augustine, and Palatka, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

2 Categories of Flat Feet

The majority of babies are born with flat feet, and they may remain that way into adulthood. Flat feet are easily noticed as the foot lies flat on the floor while standing, and the lack of an arch may be painful for some patients. Flat feet fall into two categories. Those who have weak muscles in the foot are referred to as having flexible flat feet, and the arch may be seen while lying down. With this condition, the arch will disappear when weight is put on it. Rigid flat feet will remain the same whether standing or lying down, and there may be a reduced range of motion. Many people who have flat feet choose to wear orthotics, which can be successful in treating this type of abnormal foot structure. Severely flat feet may cause difficulty in completing daily activities, and surgery may be considered for permanent relief. If you are an adult who has flat feet, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can guide you toward the relief options and offer the treatment that is best for you.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Coastal Foot & Ankle Wellness Center, LLC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in St. Augustine, and Palatka, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
